CROSSING BORDERS
Joachim Schlömer on the Pernerinsel

Dance is one of the main features of this summer’s Salz- burg Festival. On the Pernerinsel in Hallein two of Joachim Schlömer’s works will be performed.

The dancer, choreographer and director Joachim Schlömer, born in 1962, resists all efforts to pigeon-hole him. A graduate of the Furtwangler School, his career up to now has taken him to the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Theatre in Ulm, the National Theatre in Weimar and, most recently, the Theatre in Basel.. In each of these houses the audience was at first reserved and guarded but he gradually won them over. To date he can boast of 36 full-length productions.

Schlömer does not confine himself to any particular genre: he has also produced opera and drama, and he is no stranger to the film. He is very impressed by the Pernerinsel in Hallein where the theatre has all the necessary prerequisites for the two dance productions he plans to stage there in summer. One is entitled Senza Fine or When Rimini was still Beautiful and it tells of the holiday resort in winter when the veneer of summer has vanished. Schlömer says of the second work, which was specially composed for Salzburg, that it throws a light on the present from a future perspective. The cue words he uses are suffering, restoration to health, injury, self-destruction. However, the negative, he says, always contains the positive, and after the injury comes the recovery.
