Peter Turrini
Peter Turrini’s play "Da Ponte in Santa Fé", commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, will be given its world premiere on 29 July 2002 in a staging by Claus Peymann. "Don Giovanni" in the wild west Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" in the Wild West: the opera house in Santa Fé is a converted saloon, the opera director is the former owner of the saloon and the ushers were originally the bodyguards. The title of the piece to be presented has of course to fit in with this style. And so, without any scruples, the title is changed into "Don Juan or The Man who Seduced over Two Thousand Women" because it is likely to sell better. All eventualities have been taken care of: go-go girls are there to loosen up the activity on stage and tarts ready to provide additional amusement for the guests of honour and those in the boxes so that they do not become too bored. And if, in spite of all this, anyone doesn’t like the performance, they’ll simply be bumped off. Da Ponte as a brandy seller Peter Turrini’s new play "Da Ponte in Santa Fé" is set in the
foyer of Santa Fé opera house. Lorenzo Da Ponte, disguised as a brandy
seller, has sneaked in and now intends to put right what has wronged him
for so long. People are always talking about the “Great Mozart”, the composer
is praised everywhere and yet the librettist is not even mentioned on
the poster. He has to go on stage.
