GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE FRIENDS OF THE FESTIVAL The benefit dinner in mid-March hosted by Amanda and Nicholas Stannington in their villa in San Marino, California, to which American friends of the Salzburg Festival were invited, was a great success. Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler informed guests about preparations and the programme of the 2002 Festival season, the first planned by artistic director Peter Ruzicka. Members of the Vienna Philharmonic played works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss in a private chamber concert. The dinner was prepared personally by Wolfgang Puck and Austrian wines were served.
Thanks to the excellent organisational skills of Isabelle Harnoncourt, the aim of the evening – to gain new American patrons who are willing to support the Salzburg Festival with further donations – was more than achieved.
Among the guests welcomed by Amanda and Nicholas Stannington and Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler were Dick Colburn, Betty Freeman, Thea and Thomas Gottschalk, Brigitta Troy, Clemens Hellsberg (chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic) and Virgil Widrich, film-maker from Salzurg.
Brigitta Troy as president of the benefit committee held a very moving speech in which she also commemorated her husband Joseph Troy, founder of the American Friends Society, who died last year. Alberto Vilar, incumbent president of the American Friends, could not personally attend but sent a message of greeting. |
